McBride, the European maker of private label household cleaning and hygiene products, said chief executive Chris Smith intends to retire, with a successor still to be found.

Smith has begun a formal six month notice period, but has agreed to stay as chief executive and on the board until mid-2027 to allow time for an orderly handover.

McBride said a leading executive search firm was retained as part of its succession planning, to help the board define the skills and experience needed to "lead the Group to the next level". A recruitment process has now started.

Jeff Nodland, the chairman, said the group had become "more focussed and disciplined" under Smith, with a strong improvement in financial performance. He said the board was enormously grateful for his contribution.

Smith said he had thoroughly enjoyed his career at the company and considered this the right time to step aside. He said he remained fully focused on strengthening the business and delivering key projects under way.

McBride supplies private label and contract manufactured products to the domestic and professional cleaning markets.

It will make a further announcement on the appointment of Smith's successor in due course.
