Tech Bytes: OpenAI takes GPT-5.6 into AWS Kiro as AI coding costs fall

OpenAI has expanded its push into AI-assisted software development, making its full GPT-5.6 model family available through Amazon Web Services’ Kiro coding platform.

The integration brings GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna into Kiro, where developers can use the models to plan, build, review and test software against project requirements and existing codebases.

The headline number is cost. OpenAI said joint testing with AWS using the Terminal-Bench 2.1 benchmark found GPT-5.6 Terra completed successful tasks in Kiro at roughly 82% lower cost, pointing to the increasing focus among AI companies on economics as well as raw model performance.

Kiro uses a specification-driven approach that converts high-level ideas into requirements, technical designs and executable development tasks, giving AI models structured context before they begin writing code.

For developers, OpenAI said the combination is designed to reduce repeated attempts and improve consistency on longer, multi-step coding assignments.

The move follows a series of price reductions across the GPT-5.6 range. OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna API pricing by 80% and Terra by 20% in July, while an August 21 update reduced GPT-5.6 Sol API and credit pricing by more than 20% for 3 months.

The latest rollout underscores the intensifying battle to make advanced AI coding agents commercially viable at scale, with model providers increasingly competing on the amount of useful software work they can deliver for each dollar spent rather than benchmarks alone.
